Causes of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Causes of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a form of chronic pain that develops after an injury, stroke, heart attack, or surgery. The condition usually affects hands, arms, legs, or feet and often lasts for more than six months. CRPS is more common in women, but it can happen to anyone at any age. It is rare in the elderly, however, and children under ten are rarely at risk of the disease.

There isn’t a single cause for CRPS, but multiple. Knowing what causes your CRPS can help determine the best pain management treatments possible.

History of Trauma

One of the most common causes of CRPS is trauma or injury, with 90% of cases involving a clear history of both. Meaning people with fractures or sprains/strains and soft tissue injury such as cuts or bruises will find themselves at greater risk of developing the condition. Being in a cast or undergoing surgery can also lead to CRPS.

Nerve Injury

Forceful trauma to a nerve can also lead to complex regional pain syndrome. Unlike Type 1 CRPS which often happens after you’ve been ill or injured, wherein the injury doesn’t deal any direct damage to the affected limb, Type 2 CRPS happens only after an injury to a nerve.

Other Causes

A fracture or amputation can also lead to CRPS, along with other major and minor traumas. Sprained ankles, infections, heart attacks, and surgery fall under this category.

However, it’s important to note that not all people who undergo trauma or injury will develop CRPS. This may be due to a problematic interaction between a patient’s central and peripheral nervous systems. Dysfunctional inflammatory responses may be a possible cause as well.

Ketamine Treatment

There are plenty of treatment options out there. However, with the success of ketamine in treating depression and chronic pain, CRPS patients now have another option to explore. Because CRPS causes intense, chronic, and often debilitating pain, those who suffer from the condition often find themselves losing jobs and putting a strain on their relationships. With ketamine treatments providing effective and fast pain relief, CRPS patients have more hope in the future now.
